Alfred Akibo-Betts-Freetown Business School

ALFRED AKIBO-BETTS is a Chartered Accountant and a Fellow of the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants of the United Kingdom and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sierra Leone.  He holds a Honours Degree in Accounting and Finance from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone and a Master’s Degree in Taxation from the University of Pretoria in South Africa.

Alfred has considerable experience in the tax field as has worked at the National Revenue Authority for over fourteen (14) years, where he is now a Deputy Commissioner. Most notably, he was the focal person for the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax in Sierra Leone in which time he gained skills in public relations and public speaking; negotiation and project management.

Although Alfred has worked most of his professional life in the public sector, he believes in Sierra Leonean entrepreneurship and this has led him to partner with other Sierra Leoneans to form businesses in the real estate, energy, infrastructure, information technology and education sectors. Alfred is one of the Founders of the Freetown Business School.

Alfred is happily married to Binta and they have two beautiful children, Gisele and Baby Alfred.

Ajara Marie

With a Masters in Social work and a plethora of career experience in social
service delivery, academic and program development. Ajara relocated to
Africa after working in the United States. Ajara moved to Sierra Leone
with the passion to grow and rebuild Sierra Leone. Years later she is doing
just that.

As a rising business mogul and a marketing executive, Ajara Marie is young,
vibrant, enthusiastic and ready to take on the world. She is constantly
cultivating relationships with business professionals in various sectors
ranging from the public, private, governmental in Sierra Leone and in the
United States Diaspora. Her academic and career background has
strategically positioned her to gain a wealth of experience in Community &
Youth Development, Events Management & PR, Communications and Marketing,
Training and Capacity building, Clinical Services and Partnership
development in Sierra Leone and abroad. Ajara has a passion for working
with girls and women. In her area of work and business she offers her
skills to engage and introduce emerging business owners to markets in
Africa, whilst sharing her areas of expertise to young college audiences in
the United States through public speaking, strategic coaching and
development. She belongs to several organizations including the 50/50
Group, All Peoples Congress, Girls Empowerment Summit, Sigma Gamma Rho
Sorority & Power Women 232.

She has executed corporate business events services for clients for the
past 7 years under Rhoyalty Concepts a strategic events and marketing
company. In 2013 she launched her community platform for bringing women
businesses together Women Mean Business, which has gathered over 350+ women
business owners to date and provided them with networking opportunities and
resources to date. She also serves as a volunteer project manager for GESSL
a social impact organization that supports the leadership development of
Sierra Leonean girls.

Ajara has appeared in various media outlets including, Guardian Nigeria,
Afroelle Magazine, Bella Naija, Women Change Africa and recently was a
co-star in the newly released film “I Am the Film” a film that looks at the
criticality of identity of returnees and diaspora American’s. She is a
family women and mother to a beautiful 3-year-old. She infuses Afrochic
minimalism into her style wear from work to home, and enjoys traveling and
exploring cultures from the African & Caribbean diaspora.

February 7th  Freetown Pitch Night-Catalyst for Growth- BDS


The theme for the February 7th  Freetown Pitch Night was “Catalyst for Growth- BDS ”.

SME businesses have clearly grown in the last decade in West Africa and in Sierra Leone. Their development has often required external inputs from key government initiatives or NGO programs or other non-profits.

Increasingly there has a paradigm shift in private companies filling that gap with specific services for SMEs As the SME market is getting much more clearly defined by size, business cycle, sector, ICT capacity, etc…

From feasibility studies to development of business plans, business support services help prospective and existing businesses streamline their process and promote a far more efficient turnaround of their investments and function as a catalyst to their growth and success.

Within Sierra Leone there are nonetheless challenges in providing BDS services, from low data availability and costs of getting actionable data, to enabling environment of trust and the web entanglement of compliance and regulation for many opaque facets of business; we nonetheless have four businesses today that are taking up those challenges with their investment in BDS businesses.
